When I crochet for babies and toddlers, I tend to be extra cautious. I scan the pattern for any hazards to warn the client about. I will ask if they want me to embroider eyes instead of using safety eyes or if I should omit something dangly (you get the idea) So I compiled some patterns I have found to be my favorite options for very young children.
Baby Afghan
A classic loved by all babies and parents. baby afghans are usually best for stroller blankets because they are nice and heavy. A baby afghan makes a perfect baby shower gift, trust me, You can never go wrong with a one-of-a-kind blankey. for this one, I used the Red Heart C2C afghan pattern and just did about 1/4 the amount of rows. Here are some other beautiful baby afghan patterns
Lovey
Zebra Lovey
This zebra lovey by Oneandtwo company was a request from one of my friends. I just love the way it turned out! My friend requested safety eyes for this guy but usually I just use yarn. You can find the pattern here!
Rockey SHip Lovey
(pics to come) this is so creative. I love that the colors of the lovey make the flames of the rocket ship. This lovey is a perfect addition to an outer spaced themed nursery. You can find this free pattern made by Crowchet Creations here.
Baby Doll
this pattern by Lanas y Ovillos is so simple and beautiful. There are no eyeballs or extra things hanging off. I love to make these dolls when I have some extra variegated yarn laying around. You can find this pattern for free here!
Hand Puppet
what better way to entertain a baby than a cute unicorn hand puppet!? You can find the pattern by EkayG here!
Octopus for NICU babies
Studies show that crocheted octopus’s have a positive affect on preemies in the NICU. It is said that the tentacles mimic the umbilical cord which makes the baby feel more at home which stabilizes their heard beat and oxygen levels. It also distracts the baby from pulling on their medical cords. This is such an awesome way for us to donate our time as crafters. Here is an article with tons of in depth info about crocheting an octopus for a preemie. I used this pattern by crochet365knittoo to crochet this octopus for my cousins baby in the NICU.
Baby Sweater
Crocheted clothes can be a great option to for a baby. I am currently using this pattern by Crafty Plum to make a baby sweater for a special little baby in my life. I cannot wait to see her wearing it! (pics to come)
