I really hope you enjoy this free koala crochet pattern! This was my first time crocheting an amigurumi with blanket yarn. I thought it would be similar to the Himalayan Dolphin Baby yarn but it is not! There were a some positives though. First, it worked up super quick and ended up being a good size for how little stitches are in it. Secondly, he’s very fuzzy!
This pattern is a beginner pattern.
Supplies:
- Bernat Blanket yarn in vintage white (or the Walmart Mainstays Cozy Chenille Yarn)
- Blanket yarn in Grey
- Black Blanket yarn (or any thick yarn you have, you only need a very small amount)
- 8mm crochet hook
- 12mm safety eyes (CAUTION: safety eyes are not recommended for children ages 3 and under)
Abbreviations
- Ch- chain
- Sc- single crochet
- Dec- decrease
Pattern:
Head/Body
In grey:
Row 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second chain from hook (we will do this instead of a traditional magic ring because this type of yarn doesn’t do well with the typical magic ring)
Row 2: (inc)*6 times (12)
Row 3: (sc, inc)*6 times (18)
Row 4:(2 sc, inc)*6 times (24)
Row 5-8 (4 rows): sc around (24)
Row 9: (2 sc, dec)*6 times (18)
*insert the safety eyes in between rows 6 and 7 with 4 stitches in between*
Row 10: (sc, dec)*6 times (12)
Row 11: (dec)*6 times (6)
Row 12: (inc)*6 times (12)
Row 13: (sc, inc)*6 times (18)
Row 14-18 (5 rows): sc around 18 (18)
*begin stuffing the body*
Row 19: (sc, dec)*6 times (12)
Row 20: (dec)*6 times (6)
Fasten off and sew shut.
Ears (make 2)
(Note: each ear is made with two panels then crocheted together)
Panel 1:
With white:
Row 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second chfrom hook
*change to grey*
Row 2: (sc, inc)*5 times (one side of the ear will be flat)
Fasten off.
Panel 2:
With grey
Row 1: Ch 2, 6 sc in second ch from hook
Row 2: (inc)*5 times, ch1, (5)
Row 3: line up panel 1 and panel 2. Sc 9 around the edge of the ear to sew together Note: do not sew the flat side, that will stay open. (Photos below)
Fasten off, leave a long tail to sew to head.
Nose
With black:
Ch 4
Row 1: starting from second ch from hook, sc 3 (3)
Continue around
Row 2: sc 3 (3)
Row 3: inc, sc 3, inc, (7)
Fasten off, leaving a tail to sew to face.
Arms (make 2)
With grey:
Row 1: ch 2, sc 4 in second ch from hook
Row 2-9 (8 rows) sc around (4)
Legs
With grey:
Row 1: ch 2, sc 5 in second ch from hook
Row 2-7 (6 rows): sc around (5)
Fasten off. Leave a tail to sew to the body
Chest
With white:
Ch 5
Row 1: starting from second ch from hook, sc 4
Row 2: slip st, sc 3
Row 3: slip st, sc 2
Row 4: slip st, sc 1
sc around
Fasten off leaving a long tail to sew to body.
Tail
Fun fact: Koala bears don’t have tails! 😀
Assembly
Pin everything together (pictured above) then sew in place.
